Eye Camps
A regular eye-test is the best way to protect our eye-sight. But people who are economically challenged may not be inclined to seek doctor’s opinion due to cost of consultant or difficulty in finding the time to be away from work. Eye Care in India still suffers from
- Financial and logical barriers to access
- Low patients awareness of service available
- Low Doctor/Patient ratio

Toronto Calcutta Association started holding eye camps with a main thrust on the downtrodden people who are economically backward, represents the weaker segment of the society with following programme components:-
- Eye Check-up with basic guidelines, Distribution of medicine and eyeglasses in cases prescribed by the doctors.
- General awareness at the grass root level to facilitate the need for eye related preventions.
- Providing the target people a chance to meet their requirement in related cases by providing eyeglasses and medical activities.
- To make an action plan based on the experience
Selecting a patients for eye check-up
After selecting a day and an area (mainly in a school campus/ club) team TCA organise an eye camp. On that day patients have to go through the following steps-
Step 1. Selection of target area
A village with a population of more than thousand including the surrounding areas in accessible radius of 5 K.M is selected for conducting the eye-camp. A convenient venue (such as school building/ Club building in the area) and a suitable date (which does not interfere with local festivals) will be selected for conducting the eye camps. The village should have good access to nearby villages to benefit the patients around the main village. Before finalizing the village following points are considered.
- Local residents who have an eye-related problems
- Economical conditions of the Local Families
- To maximize the number of beneficiaries.
Step 2. Patient’s registration on the day
Our team composed of ophthalmologists, directors of TCA and paramedical staff of TCA proceeds to the campsite. Patient’s statistics- name, sex, age, monthly family income, no of members in the family are recorded in the register and case sheets. Patients are given identity cards which may be used for future follow up. After registration the patients are directed to enter in to the doctor’s chamber for examination.
Step 3. Preliminary examination
Ophthalmologists perform the preliminary examination Clinical conditions such as external eye infections, vision loss caused by nutritional deficiency and the incurably blind are examined. After the basic examination with the help of torch light and direct ophthalmoscope patients who have refractive errors are examined for proper refraction.
Step 4. Refraction
Refraction is performed on patients who have refractive error. The process occurs in a simple trial lens set. Vision Charts such E Type charts are used. After final examination ophthalmologists prescribe require management which could be eye glass prescription, surgery or treatment. Patients with suspicion glaucoma as well as children with significant refractive error are referred to the hospital for further investigation. Patients require cataract surgery is also advice to contact the nearby Government hospital.
Step 5. Optical Service
Optician (sales person as well as technical person) also attends the screening camp as a part of medical team. A set of frames are taken to the camp venue. Patient advice to select the frame from the sets available. Optician mounts the lens as advice by ophthalmologist in the frame chosen by the patient and supply the glass on a stipulated day as declared in the camp venue.
